Plot summary
After a shooting and a possible murder, detectives in Los Angeles bring in drummer Stanley Maxton and ask him to explain his recent past. He describes coming home from the war and from a hospital stay, hoping to earn money with his drums and one day open a club. The driver who ran his car off the road was Sonny Johnson, a racketeer who offered him a rich salary to handle his betting business. Stanley also describes meeting Jane Tafford, a dancer at Fluff's club who wants a film career and dates only men who can help her, and how he joined the band there.
