Lorna Thayer
Biography
Lorna Thayer was an American character actress who worked mostly in small film, television and stage roles. Born in Boston to a silent screen actress and a father who built sets for Universal, she took dance lessons from age five and later attended Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. Her career began in 1946 with a Players Ring production of Street Scene, followed by Berkeley Square at the Geary Theatre in San Francisco. On Broadway she played Mrs. McCarthy in Comes a Day (1958) and Bel Air Bonnie in Never Live Over a Pretzel Factory (1964). Her films included The Lusty Men (1952), The Beast with a Million Eyes (1955) with Paul Birch, and Frankie and Johnny. Thayer was best known as the waitress in Five Easy Pieces (1970) who refuses to let Jack Nicholson's character order wheat toast on the side, the scene known as the chicken salad sandwich scene. She died in 2005.
