Plot summary
Parasitic aliens known as Souls travel between planets, taking over the dominant species and shutting down the mind of the body they occupy. Earth has fallen, and the humans who escaped them live in hiding. Melanie Stryder is caught while on the run, and a Soul called Wanderer is given her body. A Seeker assigns Wanderer the task of searching Melanie's memories for a hidden group of free humans. Melanie is still present, and the two talk inside one body. Wanderer tells the Seeker about Melanie's brother, Jamie, and about Melanie's boyfriend, Jared Howe, and says the two had been heading for the desert and for her uncle Jeb. The Seeker, impatient for the location, plans to be placed into Melanie's body herself, a transfer that would destroy her. Melanie tells Wanderer to run.
