Plot summary
Susan Allison, a television journalist, takes on a profile of Caroline Thomas, who has waited at the same train station every Valentine's Day for decades. Caroline's husband, naval aviator Neil Thomas, was declared missing in action during World War II. Lucas, Caroline's grandson, overhears Susan call the story a fluff piece and confronts her; she apologizes, and the interview goes forward. As Susan spends time with the family, her growing friendship with Lucas makes her question her attachment to Andrew Hawthorne, a photographer often away overseas. Caroline tells of meeting Neil in 1943, their marriage, the house they fixed up, and the handmade valentine she pressed into his hand at the station before his train left. Letters came for a while, among them a carved wooden plane for their expected child, and then they stopped.
