The Little Vagabond (2018) on Netflix

Plot summary

It was supposed to be just another Bible study, but Pastor Joe Maddox's old buddies really just wanted their friend back for the evening. Joe tries to resist, but he's no match for the peer pressure and poker chips. Several hands in and Joe loses big. His friends are just playing for fun, but that's not Joe's style. Whatever he owes, he pays.

Joe looks for work, but jobs are scarce. The only thing available is at little bar in a nearby town - as a bartender. Joe doesn't want to take it, but he feels he has to. Besides, it's only for a little while and the church will never find out.

But they do.

A deacon, who's after Joe's job, catches him coming out of the bar late one night and calls a meeting at the church to try and vote Joe out. Joe apologizes and promises never to do it again...

But he does.

Short-staffed, the bar calls and Joe agrees to help. This time, however, it's different. This time, Joe notices that the bar patrons exhibit many of the characteristics he'd like to see in his own congregation. Generous, supportive, passionate, where are these people on Sunday morning?

The church bells ring.

Joe and company are ready for another Sunday service. Unfortunately, their truck is not. The front tire is deflated and they're going to be late. They get a ride from a young lady at the bar and the rumor mill at the church starts to churn.

A later encounter with the tattletale deacon and Joe's future is uncertain.
