Plot summary
In the summer of 1948, Dr. Faraday, a country doctor and the son of a former housemaid, is called to Hundreds Hall in Warwickshire to attend Betty, the maid, who has faked an illness hoping to be sent home. The estate belongs to Roderick Ayres, a Royal Air Force veteran scarred by burns, who is cared for by his sister Caroline; their mother, Mrs. Ayres, also lives there. The 18th-century house has decayed and the family is in financial straits. Faraday remembers visiting the Hall in 1919, when his mother worked there and he broke an acorn from a plaster carving. Servants' bells ring on their own, and a communication tube between the empty nursery and the kitchen sounds without explanation, unsettling Caroline, Mrs. Ayres and the maid.
