Plot summary
The story is set in the Spanish Empire of the 17th century. The Eighty Years' War takes Diego Alatriste's tercio to the Spanish Netherlands, where he serves King Philip IV in the Dutch Revolt. There his friend Lope Balboa is killed; before he dies, Balboa asks Alatriste to look after his young son, Íñigo, and to raise him as a soldier. Alatriste takes the boy back with him to Madrid.
