Plot summary
Gonzalo Infante is twelve and belongs to a well-off family in Santiago in 1973. His father, Patricio, works for the FAO, talks of moving the family to Italy, and sympathizes with the poor, while his mother, María Luisa, believes the classes should stay apart. At Gonzalo's private school, the principal, Father McEnroe, has launched a social integration project, and five poor students join the class. Wealthy classmates pick on them, and Gonzalo sides with Pedro Machuca. Pedro marvels at Gonzalo's room full of toys and clothes; Gonzalo sees the poverty of Pedro's shantytown home. The two also sell flags and cigarettes with Silvana at street demonstrations, first for the right and then for Allende's supporters, and Silvana mocks Gonzalo as a snob.
