The Legend of Ochi (2025) on Netflix

Plot summary

On the Black Sea island of Carpathia, villagers have hunted the primate-like ochi for generations. Maxim, a farmer and hunter, leads a party of young boys, and his daughter Yuri and his adopted son Petro are made to join. Maxim holds the ochi responsible for his wife's departure and has taught the children that the creatures are dangerous monsters. He hands Yuri a knife he says came from his own father. During one hunt, a baby ochi is left behind by its mother, and Yuri comes across it in a trap. She hides it and treats its wounded leg, and when the creature is gentle with her pet caterpillar she understands it can think. She decides to take it back to its family and runs away, while Petro, conflicted, fails to stop her.
