A role that slipped away
In 1966 Frazer Hines tried out for Ben Jackson in Doctor Who but did not win the role. That same year he was given the part of Jamie McCrimmon, companion of the Second Doctor.
A first
Hines played Jamie, and no other companion actor has appeared in as many episodes of the series. However, a large number of the episodes that featured Jamie are no longer held in the BBC's collection.
First role
Hines made his screen debut as an extra in a crowd scene in the 1955 film John and Julie, before minor roles in Moby Dick, The Weapon and X the Unknown.
Big break
In 1957, Hines landed his breakthrough role, playing Napoleon in a six-part television version of John Buchan's 1922 novel Huntingtower.
Early training
Hines went to Corona Theatre School in London after finding success, and Richard O'Sullivan, Dennis Waterman, Jeremy Bulloch and Francesca Annis were among his classmates there.
Beyond film
Hines released a novelty record, "Who's Dr. Who?", in 1968 with Major Minor Records, written by Barry Mason and Les Reed, and it flopped.
