Plot summary
Ten years have passed without rain in Oregon, and the valley around the Wallace Farm for Wayward Youth is dry and emptied out. Kendal, seventeen, looks after Dean, another orphan, who is sick with kidney failure, and she turns down Gabriel's invitation to move to his farm because she will not leave Dean. The wells are giving out, and Dean believes that Carson, a local strongman, has reached the underground water and is draining the supply. Carson runs a compound he advertises as a safe haven. When Grace's well goes dry, she accepts Carson's offer and tells Kendal that he keeps medicine that could help Dean. Kendal distrusts the offer and hides when Carson arrives.
