Plot summary
Graff's Confederate cavalry unit fought through the Civil War, and few of its men survived to the end. When the fighting stops, the survivors stay together and take up bank robbery, and the tactics and experience they carried out of the army make them more than a match for local citizens and lawmen. Then a robbery goes horribly wrong, the band is shot up, and Loomis is badly wounded. Marshal Sharp, a capable and respected lawman, leads the hunt for them. Graff decides that the wounded man must be killed rather than slow the escape. Eustis, whom Graff has trained in leadership and combat command since 1861, objects.
