- Nine days into filming, director Tamra Davis was fired. Producers Ruddy and Morgan said she had fallen behind schedule, but reports also speculated that, against Davis's vision, the studio wanted a sexier version of the $43 million-grossing Young Guns.
- Just before filming began in Sonora, California, Davis was handed a 75-page script rewrite, and the actresses reportedly received only one day's worth of weapons training and a minimal amount of rehearsal time.
SPOILER
The ending of Bad Girls was reshot after negative test screenings; Mary Stuart Masterson said the original story was more about each of the women getting their money and going their separate ways.- Production was shut down for three weeks, during which the script was rewritten to be more action-oriented and the principal cast attended a "cowboy camp" supervised by stunt coordinator Walter Scott.
- Star Madeleine Stowe later said Tamra Davis had been set up to fail, telling Entertainment Weekly that no director, given the kind of production she was given, could have come up with what the studio wanted.
- Co-star Dermot Mulroney said the studio had been dissatisfied when the dailies showed "women just sitting around, and they paid for this big action film".
