Plot summary
Exams behind him and no results until August, Frankie Griffin, one of five children, spends the summer of 1977 in Howth planning a beach party and thinking about Romy and Jayne, two classmates he believes are out of reach. Cathleen, his mother, scolds him in front of his younger brother and warns him to keep away from both girls. Frankie's theatrical father, Jack, damages the locked gate driving in, gives Frankie a goldfish as an early birthday present, and talks about his son's future before leaving for a stage production in the United States, which will keep him away past Frankie's birthday.
