Plot summary
A catastrophe has emptied San Francisco, and anthropology graduate student Alan Gould believes he may be the last person alive. He records a video log for any alien race that might find the planet, explaining what he thinks went wrong and referring to his fieldwork among the Shitabi people of the Amazon Basin, whose peaceful philosophy he tries and mostly fails to follow. Then he finds Sarah, who is convinced God is punishing her for her sins and keeps him at a distance. She makes him promise never to leave her, and the two of them drive into town for supplies. On the road they stop for a hitchhiker named Raphael, a handsome, easygoing young man, and Alan's jealousy takes hold.
