Plot summary
Noah Dugan is an unemployed pilot who owes money from gambling. Stoney, an old friend with an airfield, offers him work: carry a planeload of animals to a faraway island in the South Pacific. Bernadette Lafleur, the missionary who raised the animals at an orphanage, comes along, and the two dislike each other at once. Bobby, one of the orphans, stows away to watch over the animals, and Julie follows him aboard. Low on fuel and off course, Dugan lands the plane on an island no one has charted.

- The film's B-29 was built from four scrapped airframes kept at the US Navy's China Lake facility: two were used in Hawaii and two were shipped to the Burbank studio, where extensive modifications gave the plane a fuselage that could float. After filming, the remains had to be returned to the US Navy.
- Ron Miller, head of Disney at the time, deliberately hired a director and actors who had not worked with Disney before, wanting to broaden the studio's base, as producer Dan Miller put it.
