Plot summary
Doug Barnes teaches mathematics at a university and counts cards at blackjack tables, until Wilson, a casino security manager, puts his face on a blacklist. Barnes owes money to a usurer named Orr, who wants to know how the debt will be repaid now that Barnes cannot play. Barnes proposes building a team of card counters from his students. At the university he recruits George, who has memorized pi far past the decimal, Scott, who aces a memorization test, and Elyse, a waitress who repeats a complicated pizza order back to him. He persuades them the plan carries little risk and trains them, then brings them to Orr, who agrees to put up the money as their investor.
