Janet Carroll
Biography
Janet Carroll was an American actress who worked for more than forty years in film, television and the theater. Born in Chicago, she began classical vocal training there at twelve and turned professional in the late 1960s. She acted for five seasons at the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City and later appeared in musicals including Carousel, Gypsy, Hello, Dolly!, Mame and South Pacific. A Drama-Logue Award came for her role as Klytemnestra in Ezra Pound's Elektra. She was best known for playing Joel's mother in Risky Business (1983). Other films included The Killing Time (1987), Enough (2002), Forces of Nature (1999), Family Business (1989) and Destiny Turns on the Radio (1995). On television she had recurring roles on Hill Street Blues, Murphy Brown, Melrose Place and Married... with Children. From 2004 to 2005 she created Aunt March in the Broadway musical Little Women. She also sang jazz and recorded solo albums. She died in 2012.

Early training
Janet Carroll started classical vocal training when she was 12, studying with Greta Allum in Chicago. She kept building her voice and repertoire through formal study with Douglas Susu-Mago.

A change of course
At Simi Valley's Cultural Arts Center, Carroll held the Artistic Director post for The Jazz Series. She also sat on the Society of Singers executive board of directors as a vice president.
