Plot summary
Nic works as an obstetrician, and Jules, her wife, is trying to get a landscape design business off the ground in the Los Angeles area, where they are raising two teenagers they had using sperm from the same donor. Laser, fifteen, wants to know who his biological father is, but the sperm bank will not release that information to someone his age, so he asks his eighteen-year-old sister Joni to make the request. The bank identifies Paul Hatfield, a restaurant owner, and passes on his contact details. Joni and Laser meet Paul without telling their mothers, and he takes an interest in being part of their lives. When Nic and Jules learn what the children have done, they invite Paul to dinner, and he offers Jules work on his back garden.
