David Collings

Biography

David Collings was an English actor whose career spanned stage, television, film, radio and audiobooks. Born in Brighton in 1940, he first drew notice as Raskolnikov in a live 1964 television adaptation of Crime and Punishment. Historical parts followed, among them Percy Grainger, John Ruskin, William Wilberforce and William Pitt. He became a familiar face in cult science fiction, with appearances in Doctor Who and Blake's 7 and a role in Sapphire & Steel, and he provided the voice of the title character in Monkey and of Legolas in BBC Radio 4's The Lord of the Rings. His films included Scrooge (1970). On television he played Julian Oakapple in Midnight is a Place (1977), the villain Charn in Through the Dragon's Eye, and a headmaster in Press Gang from 1989 to 1993. The Stage called him a stalwart of the National and RSC.
