Plot summary
Ned Weeks, an openly gay writer in New York, travels to a beach house on Fire Island for the birthday of his friend Craig Donner, who collapses while playing in the surf and keeps coughing when he blows out his candles. On the bus home Ned reads about a rare cancer appearing in gay men. Dr. Emma Brookner, who treats patients with the disease and believes it spreads through sex, asks him to persuade gay men to stop having it. A meeting Ned holds at his home ends in disbelief. With Bruce Niles, Mickey Marcus, Tommy Boatwright and others, Ned founds the Gay Men's Health Crisis, which elects Bruce its president, and he asks his lawyer brother Ben Weeks for free legal advice, and he approaches Felix Turner, a reporter at the New York Times.
