Plot summary
Mister is thirteen and lives with his mother, Gloria, in a Brooklyn housing project. Gloria is addicted to heroin and works as a sex worker, and she leaves her son to look after himself. When a police raid takes her away, Mister is left with no electricity, no money and little food, expecting her to return before long. Nine-year-old Pete, a shy Korean-American boy, has a mother with the same addiction; when she disappears, Mister reluctantly takes him in. The boys spend the summer hunting for meals and dodging Child Protective Services, and Mister keeps their situation secret so they are not sent to a group home. He also holds on to an upcoming audition for a television role, his way out of poverty.
