Plot summary
Tessa is a teenage photographer living in a coastal town. She meets Skylar at a local theater, where he offers to translate a French film for her. Months later, they find each other again at a rowing meet and soon grow close; he teaches her to waltz at an abandoned honeymooners' hotel called the Empyrean and they kiss. Their relationship deepens, but Tessa has trouble expressing her feelings and pushes him away before he is set to leave for Oregon. Days later, a car accident kills Skylar and leaves Tessa injured. As she recovers, she becomes convinced that Skylar is trying to contact her from the afterlife.
