Plot summary
The Berry family lives in 1950s New England, where Win and his wife raise five children, John, Franny, Frank, Lilly and Egg. Frank is bullied at the prep school by football captain Chip Dove, and Franny is raped by Dove and his friends before Junior Jones and other football players rescue her. The family's troubles at the school lead Win to open a hotel instead, the Hotel New Hampshire, near the school John, Franny and Frank go to. A letter from their friend Freud invites the Berrys to Vienna to run his gasthaus, and the family moves to Europe and gives that house the same name.
