Plot summary

Alec Bailey works as an electrical engineer, and his parents and his twin brother Charlie have both died. He gambles, he is drowning in debt, and his television repair shop, named The Healer, is failing. His estranged uncle, Raymond Heacock, offers to pay off what he owes if Alec moves to Nova Scotia for a year, and Alec accepts. He settles into his uncle's house near Lunenburg and meets Cecilia, who knows Raymond and helps him place a newspaper ad for work. The ad is headed The Healer and says he can fix anything, so people come to him asking for miracles. Alec tells them he is an engineer and not a doctor, and, needing money, he takes a job with Cecilia, a veterinarian.
