Plot summary
Adam Hitchens studies plant and fungal life, and he moves with his wife Claire and their infant son Finn to a remote Irish village so he can examine the surrounding forest. In the woods he finds an animal carcass burst open by a fungus he does not recognize. The villagers are cold to the family and tell them to replace the iron bars they have taken down from the house, and one of them, Colm Donnelly, seems angry that they have come at all. The police repeat the local legend of The Hallow, the fairies, banshees and baby stealers said to live among the trees. A window in Finn's room is broken during the night, and Adam spots movement in the woods.

- The creatures' limbs were extended using practical effects because director Corin Hardy believed a full-CGI monster would not be scary; this let the filmmakers use on-set lighting to heighten the creepiness, an approach inspired in part by Alien.
- The baby in the film was a mix of animatronics and twins shot digitally in front of a blue screen, an effect partly inspired by the 2001 Planet of the Apes, which Hardy said mixed gritty real environments with performance capture.
- Hardy wanted to keep the shooting as real as possible, filming on location in Irish forests and around lakes; for one scene he wore a wetsuit to shoot from inside a lake.
