Plot summary
The Guardians have bought Knowhere from the Collector, and Cosmo the Spacedog has joined their number. With Christmas coming, Kraglin shares a childhood tale about Yondu ruining the holiday for Peter Quill. Quill, taken from Earth as a boy and raised by the Ravagers, has been depressed since Gamora was lost. Mantis and Drax discuss what would make their leader a fitting Christmas present and settle on fetching his childhood hero, Kevin Bacon, from Earth. The two reach Hollywood and ask around for Bacon, stopping at a bar, and a list of celebrity addresses points them to a house in Beverly Hills, where he is waiting for his family.

- The flashback sequences featuring Michael Rooker and Luke Klein were animated by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios using rotoscoping in the style of Ralph Bakshi, chosen over other studios' more traditional test animations to match the Rankin/Bass Christmas special look James Gunn wanted.
- James Gunn wrote the lyrics to the opening song "I Don't Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here)" and brought in the Old 97's Rhett Miller to compose it; the band's existing "Here It Is Christmastime" was re-recorded with Kevin Bacon for the special's end.
- A day of shooting The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in Los Angeles, planned for early January 2022, was scrapped because of the COVID-19 Omicron variant; the special had originally been set to shoot during Vol. 3's 2019 production before delays.
- James Gunn conceived The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special during production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and it became the first piece of content Marvel Studios planned for Disney+, though at that point it was being developed for ABC instead.
