Plot summary

Jake Russell, Middleton's police chief, is married to Cassie Nightingale, who helps raise his teenage children, Brandon and Lori. A plan to build a bridge joining the town to a neighboring city divides Middleton: Mayor Tom Tinsdale supports it, his wife Martha leads the opposition. At a meeting of the bridge's opponents, Cassie is put forward as a candidate for mayor and asks Martha to handle her campaign. Cassie invites her cousin Abigail, who has been evicted from her home, to visit, though the two have never met. Abigail tells Jake that she wants Cassie to win and gives Lori a love potion to win the attention of Wes, one of Brandon's friends, and Brandon resents how distracted Wes becomes. Jake's deputy, Derek Sanders, enters the race too.
