Plot summary
Middleton is home to Grey House, an abandoned building the townspeople believe is haunted by Elizabeth Merriwick, whom they call The Grey Lady. Cassandra Nightingale moves in and says the house belongs to her. Martha Tinsdale, the mayor's wife, presses Police Chief Jake Russell to look into the reports of a new resident. When a dog goes after Jake's children on their way home, they take shelter at Grey House, where Cassie treats Lori's scraped knee. Jake learns his children have already met her. His wife died three years earlier, and Brandon has grown withdrawn while Lori has nightmares.
