Plot summary
Darrin Hill, a New York advertising man, is broke and about to lose his job once his employer learns he lied about having a college degree. Debtors who counted on his paycheck close in. A private investigator tracks him down with word that his great aunt Sally Walker has died, so Darrin returns to his hometown of Monte Carlo, Georgia, for the funeral. There he hears the terms of Sally's will: her stock, worth $150,000, goes to him only if he takes over the Beulah Baptist choir and leads it to victory at the Gospel Explosion in Atlanta. The choir is small and untrained, still dominated by Paulina Pritchett. He also reconnects with Lilly, a childhood friend the congregation shuns for her nightclub singing.
