Plot summary
Vada Cavell is a high school student who steps out of class to the restroom after her younger sister Amelia calls about her first period. While she is there, a shooting breaks out, and she hides in a stall with two schoolmates, Mia Reed and Quinton Hasland, whose brother is killed in the shooting. At least sixteen students die. Vada is depressed and pulls away from her family and her best friend Nick, while spending more and more time with Mia. She cannot make herself go back into the bathroom where she hid, and the sound of a crushed soda can makes her wet her pants.
