Biography

Cy Schindell was an American actor best known for his many appearances in Three Stooges short subjects. Born in Brooklyn in 1907, he boxed professionally as a middleweight in 19 bouts between 1926 and 1928, then moved into film work, doing extra jobs at Columbia Pictures. There he became a familiar supporting face in pictures built around the Three Stooges, cast for his stocky build and tough manner as villains and authority figures, and he performed his own stunts, pratfalls included. He appeared in 37 of their shorts, among them Calling All Curs (1939), Nutty But Nice (1940) and Fright Night (1947), and in I'll Never Heil Again (1941) he played Chizzilini, a Mussolini parody. Away from the series he took smaller roles in other films, such as It's a Wonderful Life (1946), usually as working men like truck drivers, butchers or policemen. He died in 1948.
