Plot summary
His father, Harry Masters, was remembered as the best escape artist after Houdini. Danny believes his father died during a dangerous escape routine. A capable magician and escape artist himself, Danny leaves his grandmother's house and turns up at the Harding act of his Aunt Sibyl and Uncle Burke, a mind-reading double act that relies on smoke and mirrors, even though Sibyl really does read minds. Wandering the town, Danny crosses paths with Stu Quiñones and, through him, with Stu's father, Mayor Leon Quiñones, whose corruption matches his son's. Father and son have stopped dealing with each other, because Stu's schemes draw too much public attention for a politician.
