Todd Field
Biography
Todd Field is an American filmmaker who also works as an actor and musician, beginning his career as a performer. Born in Pomona, California, he grew up in Portland, Oregon, studied acting in New York with Robert X. Modica and trained as a Directing Fellow at the AFI Conservatory, where his thesis film Nonnie & Alex won a Jury Prize at Sundance in 1995. He acted in Woody Allen's Radio Days (1987), Ruby in Paradise (1993), Walking and Talking (1996) and Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (1999) before writing and directing In the Bedroom (2001), which earned five Academy Award nominations. Little Children (2006) followed, and after a long absence from features he returned with Tár (2022), which brought him Best Director prizes from the London Film Critics' Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. He also co-created the concept for Big League Chew.

Early training
Field studied acting with Robert X. Modica at his Carnegie Hall Studio in New York after leaving Southern Oregon State College, where he had attended on a music scholarship.
A change of course
Field joined the Lab Band at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, when he was sixteen. There he played trombone with his friend Chris Botti, a trumpeter who later won a Grammy.
Early training
Franklin and Nuñez, who had both attended AFI, urged Field to sign up as a Directing Fellow at the AFI Conservatory, and he did so in 1992. His thesis film, Nonnie & Alex, won a Jury Prize at Sundance in 1995.
