Tom Jones
Biography
Tom Jones is a Welsh singer whose career took off in the 1960s with a string of top 10 hits, and who went on to perform regularly in Las Vegas from 1967 to 2011. His many popular recordings include It's Not Unusual, What's New Pussycat?, Delilah and She's a Lady, along with the theme for the James Bond film Thunderball. He won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1966, was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1970 for hosting the variety series This Is Tom Jones, took an MTV Video Music Award in 1989, and won Brit Awards for Best British Male in 2000 and Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2003. He was knighted in 2006. Acting work includes the television film Pleasure Cove (1979), appearing as himself in Mars Attacks! (1996) and a voice part in The Emperor's New Groove (2000), and he returned to prominence as a coach on The Voice UK from 2012.

About the name
Gordon Mills became Jones's manager and brought him to London, where Mills was in the music business. Mills gave him the name Tom Jones, hoping to profit from the fame of the 1963 Academy Award-winning film.
First role
Jones made his acting debut in the lead role of the 1979 ABC television film Pleasure Cove, playing a suave conman named Raymond Gordon.
A role that slipped away
In 1976, Jones was to play a CIA assassin in Yockowald, his first film role. Three weeks into filming, the production ran out of money and the film was shelved.
