Plot summary
Takuro Yamashita acts on an anonymous note and returns home early one night, and there he comes upon his wife with another man. He kills her and gives himself up to the police. In prison he acquires an eel, which becomes the companion he talks to. Released, he settles in Chiba Prefecture and opens a barber shop, bringing the eel with him and speaking to it rather than to most people. He rescues Keiko Hattori from a suicide attempt, and she starts working at the shop and making boxed lunches for him. When he hunts eels with the fisherman Jukichi Takada, he leaves the lunches untouched.
