Plot summary

Genetically modified trees arrived on Earth three centuries ago and left the planet a wasteland. Japan is ruled by the Forest, a vast expanse of sapient trees whose Druids control the water supply. Agito lives in Neutral City, a settlement carved out of ruined skyscrapers at the Forest's edge, between the trees and Ragna, a militaristic nation that wants them destroyed. His father, Agashi, founded the city; Cain and Minka are his friends. A race to the water hole angers the Druids and separates Agito from Cain. Agito finds a machine with cryogenic pods and accidentally wakes Toola, a girl who has slept since the plants arrived. Toola carries a Raban, a portable electronic device, and the Forest fears a Ragna soldier named Shunack will use it to reach an environmental defragmentation system.
