Plot summary
Mikako Nagamine is a schoolgirl recruited into the UN Space Army, which is at war with aliens called the Tarsians. As a Special Agent she pilots a robotic mecha known as a Tracer, flying with a squadron based on the carrier Lysithea. When that ship departs Earth to hunt the Tarsians, her friend Noboru Terao stays behind. The pair write to each other by e-mail on their mobile phones, and the farther the ship travels, the longer each message takes to arrive. The time between a message and its reply grows to years.

- Makoto Shinkai wrote, directed and produced Voices of a Distant Star on his own Power Mac G4, animating it with LightWave, Adobe Photoshop 5.0 and After Effects 4.1; the first image he drew, around June 2000, was a girl holding a mobile telephone in a cockpit.
- ADV Films recalled its North American DVDs of the film on June 30, 2003, because the discs failed to include the original Japanese voice tracks recorded by Makoto Shinkai and Mika Shinohara.
- The score was provided by Tenmon, a friend of Shinkai's from his video game company; the music and the film were created together in sync during storyboarding, and the animation timing sometimes had to be changed to match the music.
