Plot summary
Tomoko Suzuki and her classmates sit through a summer make-up math class. When the school brass band heads off to a baseball game without its lunches, the girls talk their math teacher, Mr. Ozawa, into letting them deliver the food. On the train they eat one lunch and sleep past their stop; the rest spoil in the heat, and nearly all the band members fall ill. Takuo Nakamura, the cymbal player who missed the meal, holds auditions for replacement players. Three girls try out: two former punk musicians and the shy Kaori Sekiguchi. Takuo threatens to report the others for the food poisoning if they refuse to join. Most have never played, and they clown with their instruments while Kaori does not. Short of a full brass band, Takuo turns the group into a big band for swing jazz.
