Plot summary
At school in Ashikaga, fourteen-year-old Yūichi Hasumi is shy and isolated, a target for his older classmate Shūsuke Hoshino and Hoshino's gang. Away from them he keeps an online fan site and message board for the singer Lily Chou-Chou, posting under the alias Philia. Once the school's best student and class president, Hoshino met Yūichi at the kendo club and played him Lily Chou-Chou's music; the two grew close. Online, Yūichi trades messages with other fans, among them a frequent poster called Blue Cat. His classmate Yōko Kuno, a gifted pianist, is envied by a powerful clique of girls at the school.

The film's original 157-minute cut no longer exists because that print was burned; the missing 11 minutes included an extended rape scene, a beach scene for Yūichi echoing Hoshino's near-drowning, and an extended funeral after Shiori Tsuda's death.- Shunji Iwai became the first Japanese director to shoot a film with the then completely new digital video camera, the Sony HDW-F900; he is thought to have been inspired by his friend Hideaki Anno, who shot the digital film Love & Pop in 1998.
- Shunji Iwai's internet novel Lilyholic launched on April 1, 2000 as a website where he posted messages as several characters on a BBS; readers could post alongside his characters and interact, and some of the film's content came from that BBS.
- Nearly one thousand extras filled the concert scene, each handed an index card with detailed information about their character and even lines; some were fans of the internet novel and held BBS meet-ups during the day.
