The Echo (2008) on Netflix

Plot summary

Bobby Reynolds has finished a prison term for manslaughter and left Rikers on probation, moving into the old East Village apartment his mother had lived in until her death while he was locked up. He works as a mechanic at an auto repair shop owned by Hector Rodriguez and tries to put his life back together. Neighbors and former friends treat him as an outcast, but he meets Alyssa, a waitress studying design and his former girlfriend, and the two tentatively resume their relationship. He hears scratching and scraping, finds blood on his mother's pillow and on the piano keys, and pokes a finger into a gap in the wall behind the piano, which draws blood. Through the wall he hears Walter, a police officer, quarreling with Gina, his wife, and their daughter Carly in the apartment next door.
