Plot summary
Ray Smilie lives in a countryside house and hears a voice at night. He plays a red Flying V in front of a crucifix. His mother unplugs the guitar and says he needs a mental hospital. Later, Jesse Hellman, a painter, moves into the house with Astrid, his wife, and Zooey, their daughter. A realtor says the woman before them died in a fall on the stairs, and her husband killed himself. Jesse hears a voice too and paints an upside down cross. One evening Ray visits and speaks with Zooey. Jesse sends him away.
