Plot summary
During her high school reunion, Beth Cappadora's three-year-old son Ben disappears from a crowded hotel lobby while his older brother Vincent is meant to be watching him. The police are called and a frantic search begins, but it finds nothing. Beth suffers a nervous breakdown and neglects Vincent and Kerry, her other two children. Nine years later the family has seemingly accepted that Ben is gone and has moved to a new town. A familiar-looking boy comes to the house offering to mow the lawn and introduces himself as Sam Karras.

The original ending of Jacquelyn Mitchard's novel, which was Michelle Pfeiffer's preferred ending, was filmed but scored badly with test audiences who found it too grim, so the studio substituted a conventional happy ending and postponed the film from a fall 1998 release to spring 1999.- Oprah Winfrey was considered for the role of Det. Candace "Candy" Bliss in The Deep End of the Ocean before Whoopi Goldberg was cast in the part.
