Plot summary
In Bucharest in 2004, Father Dumitru and four nuns are arrested after Sister Adelina Marinescu dies during a three-day exorcism meant to free her of a demon called Agares. New York journalist Nicole Rawlins persuades her editor to send her to Romania to investigate the case, though he warns her not to let her own views on faith, or her mother's death, cloud her judgment. At the jail, Dumitru says he could have saved Adelina and blames a bishop for interfering with the rite. Sister Vaduva, a friend of the dead nun, tells Nicole that Adelina was not murdered. Nicole also meets Father Anton, a local priest.
