Merab Ninidze
Biography
Merab Ninidze is a Georgian actor who was born in Tbilisi and grew up in an artistic family, which led him to the stage as a teenager at the Rustaveli State Academic Theatre. He trained under Gizo Jordania and later joined the Shota Rustaveli Theatre Company. His first film part came in Tengiz Abuladze's Repentance, and he went on to work in German, Russian and English language productions. Internationally he is known for his roles in Nowhere in Africa (2001), The Courier (2020), and Conclave (2024). Nowhere in Africa won the foreign language film Oscar in 2002. He has appeared in Paper Soldier, Luna Papa, and Under Electric Clouds (2015), and in series such as Berlin Station, McMafia and Homeland. He also appeared in Jupiter's Moon (2017), which played in the main competition at Cannes, and later received the best actor prize from the Batumi International Film Festival for that film.

First role
At thirteen, Ninidze auditioned for Prince Edward in a 1979 Rustaveli State Academic Theatre production of Richard III directed by Robert Sturua; the show toured the UK three times and played the Edinburgh Festival.
Early training
Ninidze studied acting at the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Georgia State Film University from 1982 to 1985, with Gizo Jordania as his teacher. That training led to a full-time place in the Shota Rustaveli Theatre Company.
First role
Ninidze made his film debut in Tengiz Abuladze's Repentance, released in 1984. That movie earned three awards at the 40th Cannes Film Festival, among them the Grand Prize of the Jury.
Big break
Goran Rebic, an Austrian director, gave Ninidze a chance to act once civil war started in Georgia. Ninidze moved to Vienna for several months to portray a Serbian war survivor in Rebic's movie Yugofilm, and this part eventually prompted his emigration at 25.
