Plot summary
Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, and Banquo, the Thane of Lochaber, command King Duncan's army in a victory over the traitorous Thane of Cawdor. Three witches meet the two men on the battlefield: Macbeth, they say, will take Cawdor's title and one day be King, while Banquo will father a line of kings. Duncan has Ross execute Cawdor and gives Macbeth the title, yet he names his son Malcolm prince of Cumberland, which Macbeth regards as standing in the way of the throne. Duncan then stays for a night at Macbeth's castle. Lady Macbeth knows of the prophecies and presses her husband to murder the King, and a hesitant Macbeth does.
