Plot summary
An unnamed lawyer in Texas, called the Counselor, travels to Amsterdam to buy an engagement ring for his girlfriend Laura, and she accepts his proposal. At a party given by the drug dealer Reiner, the Counselor agrees to put money into a drug shipment, his first. Westray, Reiner's business associate, takes the investment and warns him that the Mexican cartels behind the deal show no mercy, though the Counselor stays confident. Ruth, a client facing a murder trial, asks him to bail out her son, a biker arrested for speeding, and he agrees as a favor. The cocaine itself is packed into barrels and driven over the border from Mexico in a sewage truck.
