Plot summary
In 1981, in Brookfield, Connecticut, Ed and Lorraine Warren record the exorcism of eight-year-old David Glatzel. The boy's family gathers with them, among them his sister Debbie, her boyfriend Arne Johnson, and Father Gordon. In an attempt to save the child, Arne invites the demon to take him instead. Ed watches the demon enter Arne, and moments later he suffers a heart attack. The next month Ed wakes in a hospital and tells Lorraine what he witnessed. Not long after, Arne is accused of killing his landlord, and the Warrens take on the first American murder trial to claim possession as a defense.

- The film is based on the real 1981 Connecticut murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, and on The Devil in Connecticut, Gerald Brittle's book about that trial.
- During reshoots, director Michael Chaves cut a demonic antagonist played by Davis Osbourne because he felt the character "just wasn't quite connecting", and instead gave Osbourne a part as an infirmary patient. John Noble's role was expanded in the same reshoots.
- James Wan said the case behind the film was the first time in America's history that a defendant used possession as a reason, as an excuse.
