Plot summary
Japanese authorities notify Sara Price that her twin sister Jess is presumed dead. Jess entered Aokigahara, a forest where people often go to end their lives. Her fiancé Rob worries, but Sara flies to Japan and takes a room at the hotel where Jess had been staying. She meets Aiden, a travel journalist. Sara tells him about the car crash that killed her parents near the family home, and says that Jess saw the bodies, not her. Aiden offers to join her search with a local guide, Michi. Michi warns that the forest can create illusions.

- The Forest drew controversy over what some believed was the trivializing of suicide in Japan and a disrespect toward the people who have died in the real Aokigahara forest.
- Because the Japanese government does not permit filming in the Aokigahara forest, the filmmakers used a forest near Tara Mountain in Serbia to double for the Japanese forest where the film is set.
- Bad weather hit the film's shoot in Serbia, and many scenes of The Forest had to be shot inside a former warehouse.
- Goyer came up with the idea for The Forest after reading a Wikipedia article on Aokigahara, and was surprised that no horror film had yet been made about the forest.
- Director Jason Zada traveled to Aokigahara before shooting, feeling he could not make a movie about a real place without visiting it, and called it a very frightening place where he did not want to spend the night.
