Plot summary
Bill Doolin leaves jail and travels home on a train that his boyhood friends, the Dalton Gang, rob. Crooked railroad officials accuse him of aiding the holdup, so Doolin becomes an outlaw and rides to the gang's hideout. Bob Dalton and the others, among them Bitter Creek Dalton, Dynamite Dick Dalton and Red Buck, want him to join them. Their next job is a pair of Coffeyville banks, struck at the same time, and Doolin agrees to ride along. He also meets Carrie Roberts, the daughter of rancher Pat Roberts, and Marshal John Sutton takes up the hunt for the gang.

- In the original script for The Cimarron Kid, outlaw Bill Doolin died at the end, but Universal Pictures changed the ending to reflect the rising popularity of its star, Audie Murphy.
- The Cimarron Kid was Budd Boetticher's first Western, his first film in color and his first under a long-term contract with Universal Pictures; he said he became a Western director because they thought he looked like one and rode better than anyone else, and that he knew nothing about the West.
